Inflammatory Sashays (Sorry Jenny), 2015, 11˝ × 11˝ xerox prints on colored paper
By co-opting the language of reality television and the style of Jenny Holzer’s influential Inflammatory Essays, this work brings Internet meme and mashup culture out of the artblog and into real life. Holzer toys with pop culture and politics, coining aggressive statements in the tone of figures like Emma Goldman and Vladimir Lenin. The text for Inflammatory Sashays is taken entirely from Logo TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race. Typeset in the manner of Holzer, the over-dramatic words of drag queens up for elimination become extra poignant when stripped from their original context and given another.
